Shards of Alara Block

The Shards of Alara block, consisting of Shards of Alara (released October 3, 2008), Conflux (February 6, 2009), and Alara Reborn (April 30, 2009), explores a multiverse fractured into five distinct "shards"—each a three-color world missing two allied colors. These shards are Bant (WUG), Esper (WUB), Grixis (UBR), Jund (BRG), and Naya (RGW), each with its own mechanics and identity. The block introduces Exalted, Unearth, Devour, Cascade, and Domain, while focusing heavily on multicolor gameplay. Shards of Alara sets the stage with shard-based mechanics, Conflux begins merging the shards, and Alara Reborn completes the fusion as Magic's first all-multicolored set. Notable cards include Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Noble Hierarch, Maelstrom Pulse, Bloodbraid Elf, and Thraximundar. With bold mechanics, rich world-building, and impactful cards, the Shards of Alara block remains a high point for multicolor Magic design.
