Ice Age Block

The Ice Age block, made up of Ice Age (released June 1995), Alliances (June 1996), and the much-later Coldsnap (July 2006), is themed around a harsh, frozen world and emphasizes resource management, snow permanents, and color hosers. It introduced the Snow-Covered land type, the Cumulative Upkeep mechanic, and cards that punish or reward certain color interactions. Ice Age brought larger set size and complexity, Alliances refined those ideas with splashier spells and synergies, and Coldsnap was designed a decade later as a “lost set” to complete the block. Notable cards across the block include Brainstorm, Force of Will, Swords to Plowshares (reprint), Balduvian Horde, Thawing Glaciers, Counterbalance, and Dark Depths. With its unique setting and iconic spells, the Ice Age block remains a distinct chapter in Magic's history.
